WHAT:

To celebrate the beginning of year number four of the highly successful Clean & Green Buffalo Bayou clean up and restoration initiative, volunteers from Shell Oil Company will remove trash along Buffalo Bayou at the waterway’s juncture at the Ship Channel. We are pleased to announce that Shell continues to be our lead sponsor, and will be presenting a check as we begin the fourth year for the Clean & Green program.

Meet those Clean & Green program partners who are making a difference in cleaning up our city’s historic waterway.

The Clean & Green program was conceived as an ongoing public-private partnership using community service workers through the Harris County Judiciary to clear Buffalo Bayou and the Houston Ship Channel of floating debris.

Shell Oil Company and The Port of Houston Authority anchor the Clean & Green Port of Houston Program. Buffalo Bayou Partnership is the managing partner with support from the Greater East End Management District, Harris County Constable Precinct 6, and Harris County Community Supervision and Correction Department.

DIRECTIONS: Take Navigation approximately 4.6 miles to Harrisburg; turn left on Harrisburg; go under the railroad bridge and turn IMMEDIATELY right; follow road around, under bridge to top; there will be a tent set up at the site.

Since the inception of the Clean & Green program, September of 2007, the following has been accomplished:

 

An estimated 13,000 cubic yards of litter has been collected from a 14-mile stretch of Buffalo Bayou. This is enough trash to fill 433 dump trucks.

Over 880 community service workers have logged 28,557 hours.

In addition to removing trash and debris, community service workers recycled approximately 24,000 plastic bottles each week collected from Buffalo Bayou and the Port of Houston Ship Channel.
